Far North Queensland

Queensland, state in northeastern Australia, bounded on the north by the Gulf of Carpentaria, on the east by the Coral Sea, on the south by the state of New South Wales and on the west by the Northern Territory. Queensland is the second largest of Australia's states after Western Australia. Queensland has 7400 km of coastline, with the magnificent Great Barrier Reef stretching along the shoreline in the Coral Sea. The capital of Queensland is Brisbane. The Great Dividing Range separates Queensland into four regions: the eastern plains, islands, and reefs of the coast; the eastern highlands; the western plains; and the northwestern uplands. Roughly bisected by the tropic of Capricorn, Queensland has a climate ranging from tropical (hot and humid) and subtropical (warm and somewhat humid) in the north to temperate (moderate in temperature and humidity) in the south.

Things to do in Far North Queensland

There are many things to see and do in Far North Queensland for the whole family. North Queensland is home to some beautiful national parks, waterfalls and rainforests, including the Daintree Rainforest. You can explore the rainforest or take a Daintree River Cruise. From Cairns catch the Kuranda Scenic Railway or the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway to the Kuranda (within the Atherton Tableland). There is an old mining town at Chillagoe, featuring some spectacular caves which can be explored with a guided tour. Along the coast there are many beaches, as well as a beautiful marina in the form of Port Douglas. North of Port Douglas is the Mossman Gorge, which has some great walking trails and swimming spots. North Queensland is also world renown for its Great Barrier Reef. You can swim among the colourful fish and coral, take a glass-bottom boat, or scuba dive. There are also many places among the tropical islands to relax and be pampered.

Far North Queensland Didgeridoos - iDIDJ Australia
Exhibition of authentic didgeridoos from Far North Queensland, Australia

Far North Queensland Didgeridoos - Old didgeridoos from Queensland are extremely rare, and only one 19th century example is known to be in existence. Field research by ethnologist Roth indicates that the instrument was traded to the Far North Queensland area from the Gulf country sometime in the early 1800s, and that the instrument was known locally as yiki-yiki. These didgeridoos were longer than those found in other parts of Australia, typically measuring from 7 to 9 foot long. Unfortunately, no field recordings of the yiki-yiki are extant, so it is unknown whether the local playing style of Far North Queensland was overtone-present or -absent.
